African Rally Champion 2007

FIA AFRICAN RALLY CHAMPION, 2007

Meet Conrad

What’s your favourite food?
Pizza. Probably pepperoni.

Drink?
Chocolate milkshake.

Where’s your ideal place for a holiday?
It’s not really a holiday, but I always love to go back home. I really like the water, so anywhere near the sea.

Would you rather cook or eat out?
It depends. If I’m tired, I’ll go to a restaurant, but if it’s a special occasion I quite like to cook. I’m not that great at cooking, but I don’t mind having a go. My sister’s a good cook.

That’s handy, given that you share a flat with Bianca...
Yeah, it’s good. She’s just finished university. When you’re a long way from home, it’s good to be close to family.

What sort of music do you listen to?
I like everything. I like dance music. When I’m tired on the recce, I’ll have some dance music going on the iPod. I’ve got the iPod in the rally car as well now, which is really good for music on the long road sections.

You’re on a 24-hour flight to New Zealand, who’s the ideal person to have sitting next to you?
I don’t know, I’ve always fancied the Princess of Monaco! I’d probably have to be in first class to be sitting next to her!

Blonde or brunette?
Brunette.

Beer or wine?
Depends on what mood I’m in. I never really enjoyed wine before, but I’m coming around to it now. But when I’m out with my mates, I still enjoy beers.

Fish and chips or sushi?
Fish and chips.

Surf or ski?
Ski. I don’t know how to surf, but I do quite a lot of wakeboarding.

If you weren’t a rally driver, what would you be?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a professional hunter. My grandfather had a hunting camp, so we went from really young. We’d go hunting and fishing up there. I guess I’d be back home in Zimbabwe helping my dad out, but not in an office job. I’m more of an outdoors kind of person.

What are you most proud of?
I guess winning the Safari Rally was good. But, as well as that, when I was 16, I shot the biggest buffalo in Zimbabwe that year – that was pretty awesome. And, of course, winning my first rally when I was aged 16. Sixteen was a good year.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve done?
Getting my helicopter licence. It’s one of the most challenging things. Flying has always been one of my passions and, in Africa, there are a lot of helicopters and private planes around. It also seems to go with rallying as well, everybody seems to be into it in the WRC. Basically, I had the opportunity to do my licence when I was living in Wales, so I jumped at it.

Do you get much flying done?
The company that dad works for has a helicopter, so I’ve converted to that and whenever I go home I can fly him around.

What’s your road car?
Around here in London, I use my sister’s Seat. But back home I’ve still got my pickup.

Whereabouts in London do you live?
Wimbledon village. It’s close enough to be in London, but it’s also got a bit of a feeling of being in the country.

Why London?
It’s kind of the centre of the world, to my mind. I’ve got a British passport and you speak quite good English here! I didn’t like London so much to start with, being quite an outdoor kind of person, but I’ve got used to it. It’s really good for travelling – we’re half an hour from Gatwick or Heathrow here. That makes my life easier. It’s also good because I’ve got quite a few friends in London.

Do you see much of them?
Away from rally yes. It’s good to go out with them, it’s a different scene from the WRC.

Rather drive or be driven?
Drive. Always. The only person I don’t mind driving me is dad. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a nervous passenger – I’d just rather drive myself and get there quicker!

Describe your perfect day...
Wake up late. And spending the day on the river fishing with my mates.

I take it we’re not talking the River Thames?
No way! The Zambezi!

Are you into any other sports?
I was big into rugby at school. When I did the African Championship, it was either first team rugby or rallying. I went for rallying. I’ve always been into quad-biking and jet-skiing again.

You are Mr Outdoors, aren’t you?
Yes. I get bored quite quickly.

We’ve been indoors for quite a while now...
Yeah, probably time to go!
